What is the difference between Retinol and Retinol Esters
Retinol takes two steps to convert to retinoic acid, first converting to retinaldehyde, considering it more effective than retinyl esters. However, not all skin types can tolerate it. Skin can take a while to acclimate to retinol, sensitive or not, so tolerance needs to be built up slowly.
Retinol esters, on the other hand, are forms of retinol that have been esterified to improve its stability and reduce irritation to the skin. This means that these vitamin A derivatives are quite mild.
Products with retinyl esters are great for first-time users or people with very sensitive skin. With consistent use, they can still help address a number of skin concerns, including lines and wrinkles, and even milder forms of acne.
